OUR BEGINNINGS WERE HUMBLE
ReachICE is very close to my heart. The idea has a very organic start. I moved to Australia a few years ago. I was new to the environment and did not when exactly I need to call 000. I came across a few guys who followed me home and one of the guys was even seen in the building I was renting. I kept it from my husband for the fact that he gets worried. When I first discussed this with him, he got concerned and we started looking at ways to mitigate this situation next time i see these guys. At that time we thought, if it's worth developing something may be just a button that communicates to him that I need help when I do. We developed a test app for this. To our excitement it worked. Every time I press this button, it sends a message to my husband and generates a call. There was hardly any false alarms generated during this time.
After that I started working, I had to leave very early for work sometimes in dark during winter. My husband wanted me to send him a message when I reach work. Sometimes I used to forget. Later, we thought may be it's about time that we add a Check In function to this app which means that I don't have to send him messages, I could just press Check In and he would know that I'm fine.
One day I asked him, it's good that we have these two functions in the app but what happens if I'm in danger and you just have that initial message of help and that's it. After that you don't know I'm. He thought that was a valid point and developed another feature which including GPS location and live tracking of the user of the app. Retrospectively other features have been added such as multiple emergency contacts, integration with social media (facebook), Start Protection and Shut Down function.
In this way the app kept growing. We did a lot of scenario playing when designing this app. We did a lot of research we could based on statistics available on the internet. During that time we read so many articles of assaults, homocide and other crimes against persons which had a real affect on us. One day my husband and I decided that it was enough, we can't let that happen, if we have something that we developed for ourselves, we need to go out there and share it with people so that the good is spreaded to wider community. I strongly believe that these crimes are community problems and require a community response by the people in their best capacities.
And before we knew we were solving problems of millions of people out there who either start early for work or end late; some stay at home and need help; some go out to work; some are men, some are women and some are children.
The basic idea is very simple; regardless of our gender, religion or ethnic descent; we all need safety and that is our basic right. No one can deprive us of that and together we will make an effort to achieve that!
We definitely promote safety for everyone and think that we should all play our parts to ensure that we have done enough to make this society a safer place for us to live! We started this work as Corporate Social Responsibility but realised that there's a wider audience who's looking for help and we are committed to that. We have evolved since then and have taken it to the next level which is making it available for Enterprises as well. If you think that your family, employees, colleagues & others need this then step forward and discuss this with us!
